Investing to help farmers improve land and waterways

Guy Barnett,Minister for Primary Industries and Water

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government is working with farmers and landcare groups to sustain the productive soils, rivers, biodersity and other natural resources that underpin our valuable agricultural sector.

In partnership with the TFGA and Landcare Tasmania, the Government is providing more than $200,000 in funding for thirty eight projects across the state, attracting in kind contributions from farmers and landholders estimated at $270,000, making the total investment more than $470,000 in on-ground works.Funded project activities include:

  • Riparian and wetland restoration;
  • Weed management;
  • Protecting and revegetating habitat;
  • Erosion works to improve water quality; and
  • Fencing to protect and enhance biodiversity.

Investing in landcare is an investment in the future of our farmland and it strengthens Tasmania’s reputation for producing premium food and agricultural products.

We have also doubled funding for Landcare Tasmania to $960 000 over 4 years and increased funding for Natural Resource Management to $4.2 million over 4 years.

Additional grant rounds under the Landcare Action Grants Program will be available through to 2022.

Information about the Program including eligibility criteria and application and assessment processes are available through the TFGA at https://www.tfga.com.au/uploads/general/LAGs_Program_Guidelines-15-April-2019.pdf

It is great to see the work being done by Landcare Tasmania ahead of National Landcare Week 1-7 September, which recognises the valuable contribution volunteers make to protect and rehabilitate their local environment.
