Thum Prints – Tom Thum and Gordon Hamilton

In what will be one of the coolest music events this year, world-renowned beatboxer Tom Thum and classical powerhouse Gordon Hamilton will perform their genre defining symphonic show, Thum Prints with Queensland Symphony Orchestra on Friday 8 April at QPAC’s Concert Hall.

Featuring original compositions written by Tom and Gordon, Thum Prints show is a musical watershed of jazz, hip-hop and off-the-wall experimental sounds, bridged by comedic interludes, short bursts of pastiche and reinterpretations of symphonic classics. In addition, Gordon and QSO perform a matching selection of mind-blowing orchestral pieces from composers such as Philip Glass, John Adams, J.S. Bach, and more.

Tom, Gordon, and QSO have a long and fruitful history of performing together. The collaboration first came into existence as part of the Orchestra’s former contemporary music program, QSOCurrent, in 2015.

The working relationship continued in 2016 when Thum Prints and QSO made its way to Melbourne for the first-ever international BBC Proms, under the baton of Alondra de la Parra. In 2020, Thum Prints joined the stellar line-up of talent as part of the Brisbane Powerhouse’s Lights On series, which welcomed back live music and art after the year’s COVID-19 lockdown.

In 2022, the anticipation is building to return the collaboration to the QPAC Concert Hall with the full QSO orchestra.

Exceeding all expectations, the concept and execution of Thum Prints has brought orchestral music to a young audience without alienating aficionados of the artform. Tom’s beatboxing agility and Gordon’s compositions seamlessly interweave with one another to create harmony within this juxtaposition of sounds.
