Keeping Our Community Safe And Serviced

NT Government

The Territory Labor Government is continuing to modernise how we protect our community.

Today, the Fire and Emergency Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 passed in the Northern Territory Legislative assembly, meaning today Fire and Emergency services get the recognition they deserve.

This bill formally splits the tri-service of the Northern Territory Police Force (NTPF), Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) and the Northern Territory Emergency Services (NTES) into two standalone agencies.

NTFRS and NTES will now be a sole agencies led by a new Commissioner of Fire and Emergency Services, streamlining direction, focus and resources.

This also allows for the sole portfolio of Police to be formed, this separation is yet another pillar put in place by the Territory Labor Government to address crime and anti-social behaviour.

This bill also simplifies the once challenging process of applying for a permit to light a fire in an emergency response area.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Police & Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, Brent Potter:

“The Territory Labor Government is doing right by our emergency services.

“We understand crime and anti-social behaviour is the most prevalent issue facing the NT right now, that is why our Government continues to evolve, modernise and take appropriate action to support our front line.

“This separation also allows NTFRS and NTES to better focus on building their capability to protect the Territory and industries critical to our economy.

“This is just another step our Government has taken to ensuring our agencies get the resources they need and our communities get the services they deserve.”
