Five Kimberley sporting groups are among 17 groups receiving funds under the latest rounds of the State Government’s Active Regional Communities grants program and the North-West Travel Subsidy initiative.
Initiatives to be funded include:
- assisting athletes in Derby to participate in Athletics West programs as well as an opportunity to travel to Broome to take part in the North West Championships ($5,000);
- mentoring new taekwondo trainers in Kununurra ($2,500);
- assisting Kununurra Gymnastics Club to train new coaches ($2,500);
- enabling the Broome Basketball Association to develop 12 referees as part of the Broome Basketball Carnival ($2,000); and
- helping members of the Kununurra Soccer Association with travel costs to enable them to attend professional development activities in Perth hosted by Football West ($2,500).
The Active Regional Communities grants program aims to increase the opportunities for regional people to participate in sport and active-recreation activities in regional Western Australia.
The North West Travel Subsidy aims to assist young athletes living in the Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne regions.
Both initiatives are administered by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:
“I’m pleased that the State Government has been able to help these keen athletes living in the regions develop their playing coaching and officiating skills.
“Some of our best athletes come from regional WA and we should do everything to help them participate more fully and reach their true potential.”
As stated by Kimberley MLA Josie Farrer:
“We have so many talented athletes in the Kimberley, these grants will allow our athletes and sporting organisations to upskill and better their sporting knowledge.
“Giving these groups the opportunity to better their professional development will not only benefit their own organisations but the community as a whole.”
Additional Active Regional Communities and North West Travel Subsidy grant recipients include:
- $4,100 to Karratha & King Bay Horse and Pony Club to run a State Coaching Clinic
- $1,300 to Carnarvon Netball Association for a coach and umpire upskilling project
- $3,035 to Riverview Country Club in Albany to host the 2020 State Sand Greens Golf Championship
- $2,000 to Geraldton Mountain Bike Club for coaching accreditation for skills development
- $1,500 to Exmouth Touch Association to host the North West Touch Football Carnival 2020
- $1,500 to Bunbury’s Swan River Horse Trails Club to upskill eventing sport volunteers
- $2,300 to Karratha District Junior Soccer Association and $2,000 to Carnarvon Junior Soccer Association to support participation in Country Week Soccer 2020
- $2,300 to Karratha Hockey Association to support participation in the CBH Group WA State Country Hockey Championships 2020
- $2,000 to Exmouth Amateur Swimming Club to support participation in the Pilbara Championships and the SunSmart Country Pennants Swimming Championships in Mt Barker
- $2,300 to Karratha Netball Association to support participation in the Fuel to Play & Go Association Championships
