King Stingray launching Wollongong’s Youth Week celebrations

From Monday 4 to Thursday 14 April, we’re celebrating NSW Youth Week. Youth Week is an opportunity for young people to share their ideas, attend live events and have their voices heard on issues that matter to them.

This year’s theme is ‘It’s up to YOU’th’ and this year, we’re launching Youth Week with a special one-of-its kind workshop by King Stingray and Yours & Owls.

Held on Friday April 1, just prior to the Yours & Owls Festival, the event will see King Stingray deliver “an exploration into some traditional Aboriginal creative processes and practices”. The event will kick off with a smoking ceremony and cultural demonstration. The band will also host a Q&A session with attendees and close the evening out with a stripped-back live performance.

Event details and booking information for this free event is available on Eventbrite.

At the same time, we’re holding a number of other great Youth Week events including:

  • Yours & Owls All Ages Show – a sneak peak of some of the hottest acts from the main event paired with local talent
  • Floodfest – A free all-ages show curated by local band Floodway.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said that Wollongong’s young people contribute to the whole community through their creativity, unique perspective and talents.

“Youth Week originally began as a NSW Government initiative in 1989. Since then it has grown to be a celebration of young people in every state and territory across Australia,” Cr Bradbery said.

“On a more local level, we’re celebrating Youth Week with some really great events, including launching Youth Week with the help of Yolngu surf-rockers, King Stingray. To say we’re excited is a bit of an understatement.”

As part of Youth Week, we’ll be partnering with 10 local high schools to run targeted Speak, Share, Change forums.

“These forums encourage young people to express their ideas and contribute to Council decisions that impact their lives, now and into the future,” Cr Bradbery said.

“Our young people have so much value and talent to offer our whole community. It’s vital that we provide them with opportunities to share their thoughts and perspectives on the matters that impact them. A lot of the work from the Speak, Share, Change forums will help inform the type of support and programs that Council’s Youth Services will offer into the future.

“Finally, I’d like to encourage all of our younger residents to get involved this Youth Week! Make the most of what’s on offer and use this celebration as an opportunity to rediscover your community, build social networks and have fun.”
