Officers from Knox Highway Patrol have impounded a vehicle in Ferntree Gully last night.
The Mazda E200 van was travelling east on Burwood Highway when officers saw the vehicle turn from Clyde Street onto the Highway about 11.40pm.
The driver accelerated and the rear of the vehicle slid out, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
A 23-year-old Beveridge man was behind the wheel and it was established he was a learner driver.
His vehicle was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1325.00
He is expected to be charged on summons with failing to have control of motor vehicle, fail to have a supervising driver, careless driving and other traffic related offences.
The impound forms part of Operation Achilles where officers across the state are working together to reduce and disrupt hoon activity using shared intelligence to identify those responsible for organising hoon meets.
This intelligence is being used to task proactive patrols to identified hoon hotpots using a range of personnel from across the state, including officers from the Highway Patrol, Crime Investigation Units, Divisional Response Units and local general duties police. Specialist support from the Public Order Response Team is also utilised when required.
Where arrests are not made on the spot, police are continuing to thoroughly investigate in the aftermath of the event to ensure offenders are identified and charged where appropriate.
