A re-elected National Government will strengthen hunter-led conservation, protect access to the outdoors, and better recognise the value of hunting and fishing to New Zealand.
Hunting and Fishing spokesperson James Meager says the plan will build on National’s work this term to establish New Zealand’s first Herds of Special Interest, increase hunting opportunities, and improve access.
“Hunting and fishing are part of the Kiwi way of life. They put food on the family dinner table, support regional communities, and connect New Zealanders with the outdoors,” Mr Meager says.
“Hunters and anglers also play an important role in conservation. They have the skills, knowledge and commitment to help manage animal populations and protect the places in which they hunt and fish.”
A re-elected National Government will:
- Recognise valued introduced species in law
- Strengthen the Game Animal Council and modernise Fish & Game
- Seek proposals for additional Herds of Special Interest
- Replace the outdated Tahr Control Plan
- Improve recreational access to suitable Crown land
- Work with the sector to grow hunting-related jobs and exports
“For too long, valued introduced species have too often been treated simply as pests, without properly recognising their hunting, heritage, cultural and economic values,” Mr Meager says.
“Our approach will ensure these species can be managed for their hunting values, while maintaining strong environmental safeguards and improving conservation outcomes.”
“It does not mean increasing animal numbers or weakening protections for native species. Management will remain practical, evidence-based and responsive to local conditions.”
National will also strengthen the Access Charter for Recreational Hunting and Fishing on Public Conservation Land and Waters and ensure suitable Crown land managed by Land Information New Zealand is open to recreational hunting and fishing.
“Access is fundamental. Hunters and anglers should be able to enjoy suitable public land, rivers and lakes wherever this can be done safely and responsibly,” Mr Meager says.
The plan will also support tourism operators, accommodation providers and other businesses across regional New Zealand.
“New Zealand has a world-class hunting offer. We will work with the sector to promote it overseas and remove unnecessary red tape that gets in the way of growth.
“This is a balanced plan that recognises the value of hunting and fishing, backs hunter-led conservation, and protects our unique natural environment,” Mr Meager says.
