Labor’s lack of leadership continues

Nic Street, Minister for Sport and Recreation

It has been almost two months since the Rockliff Liberal Government landed the 19th AFL licence for Tasmania, but Tasmanians are still none the wiser on whether Labor will kill the dream.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan made it clear yesterday that there “needs to be some leadership and decision-making by the Tasmanian Parliament on whether they want the team or not.”

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Nic Street, said it is time for Rebecca White to finally show some leadership and let go of the fantasy that she can somehow support the team without the stadium.

“This Government has done the hard yards and made the tough calls to bring this deal this far,” Minister Street said.

“The only thing standing in the way of certainty for the stadium and therefore Tasmania’s AFL team is Rebecca White.

“If she doesn’t get on board soon, surely it is only a matter of time before the mainland operators of the Tasmanian Labor Party get fed up – just like the Tasmanian public – and move against her.”
