Liberal Party all talk and no action on renewable energy opportunity

Tasmanian Labor
  • Will Hodgman all talk and no action over renewable energy
  • Liberals put nuclear over hydrogen
  • Government failing to achieve real outcomes
  • Will Hodgman is all talk and no action when it comes to maximising Tasmania’s renewable energy advantage.

Shadow Minister for Energy, David O’Byrne, said Labor agreed with Will Hodgman today when he acknowledged the importance of renewables, but Tasmanians were yet to see the Government seizing these opportunities.

“We need to know what Will Hodgman is actually doing to realise the opportunities for Tasmania around renewable energy generation. It’s one thing to talk about it, but another to take real leadership and make it happen,” Mr O’Byrne said.

“Labor is a great supporter of renewable energy opportunities like project Marinus and yet we don’t see the same commitment from the Liberals.

“We know that Guy Barnett was a no show at the last Energy Minister’s COAG meeting and therefore failed to argue for a change in the national rules of capital cost allocation, the beneficiary principle, to support the Marinus connection business case.

“The Federal Minister is advocating for projects on the mainland from non-renewable sources that kill the Marinus business case.

“As we have seen at this weekend’s Liberal State Council, the membership of the Liberal Party is more interested in pursuing nuclear energy rather than maximising Tasmania’s renewable energy opportunities.

“Whilst Hydro and Tas Networks are building the business case, the Government is failing to support them and make this a reality.

“The Liberals should be working hard to secure opportunities like green hydrogen for Tasmania which has the potential to create 500 new jobs.

“Labor is committed to the establishment of a hydrogen plant in Tasmania but we risk being overtaken by other states because the Liberals have no strategy.

“Tasmanians are sick of all the talk, endless reports and failure to meet deadlines. They want a Government that is committed and capable of achieving real outcomes and is willing to fight for local jobs.”
