Liberals in disarray

Tasmanian Labor
  • No certainty around leadership of government
  • Why the wait to formalise resignation?
  • Will Hodgman wants to anoint successor
  • The question of who is the Premier of Tasmania should not be left hanging while senior Liberals jockey for position.

Labor Member for Braddon Shane Broad said Tasmanians deserve certainty from government.

“The one thing the Liberals have tried to project is stability, but they are clearly in disarray again.

“Since the last election the Liberals have been neither stable nor a majority government.

“Will Hodgman had every opportunity to ensure a seamless transition, but instead the party leadership vote will be delayed, with at least three contenders trying to shore up support. That’s a recipe for division and disunity.

“There’s no sign of the Liberals since the Premier’s announcement. The leadership hopefuls are all in back rooms lobbying to get the numbers for the top job.”

Dr Broad said Will Hodgman should not delay his visit to the Governor until after the party room holds a vote on the leadership.

“Delaying his formal resignation simply signals that he does have a favourite to replace him but that person needs him to drum up support for the party room ballot.

“At the very least, the Liberals should be clear about when the party will meet to elect a new leader, and give Tasmanians some confidence that it won’t drag on.”
