Liberals’ new candidate doesn’t believe in science 30 January 2024

As if the pre-selection of hard-right conservative Eric Abetz didn’t undermine Jeremy Rockliff’s leadership enough, the Tasmanian Liberal Party has today confirmed the pre-selection of a candidate who doesn’t believe in science.

During a Kingborough Council meeting last year, Aldo Antolli told his colleagues that he wasn’t “a believer” of anthropogenic climate change – which means he doesn’t think the burning of fossil fuels or other human activities have had an impact on the climate.

Mr Antolli’s “belief” – which has been extensively dispelled by the world’s top climate change scientists and authorities – is both wrong and dangerous for Tasmania’s clean, green image.

But perhaps more worrying for Jeremy Rockliff, is that it completely contradicts the Premier’s moderate and progressive approach, indicating a further lurch to the right for the Liberals.

After 10 years in government, moderate Liberal viewpoints championed by Premier’s Hodgman, Gutwein and Rockliff are looking like being kicked to the kerb as the right take over.
