Libraries ACT ready to welcome back Canberra’s bookworms

With restrictions easing across the city, Libraries ACT will re-open an initial three library branches across Canberra from Wednesday 20 October 2021.

“Library branches at Belconnen, Gungahlin and Tuggeranong will re-open providing a range of times throughout the week, including on weekends, for people to visit and access library services,” said Dani Wickman, Acting Executive Branch Manager, Libraries ACT.

“We know Canberrans love their local libraries and have been waiting for branches to re-open, so we thank them for their patience. More branches will open their doors from 1 November 2021 as we work to ensure staff and members can visit branches as safely as possible.

“Members wishing to use a computer can do so without making a booking, subject to computer availability. However, there will be restrictions in place for all users of the library when visiting,” Ms Wickman said.

Physical distancing measures will be maintained and branches will be capped at no more than 25 people. Visits will be limited to 30 minutes, masks will be required to be worn and members will need to use the Check in CBR App on arrival. Library staff members can assist anyone without a smart phone to check in. Community rooms will remain closed at this time.

Ms Wickman also reminded library members that due dates on borrowed items have been extended.

“We are anticipating library members are excited to return to a branch, but there is no rush for members to return items as the due date has been extended to 30 November 2021. This is also important to note because return chutes will initially only be open at the three library branches that are re-opening.

From Wednesday, the three branches – Belconnen, Gungahlin and Tuggeranong – will be open with an interim schedule:

  • Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10 am – 5.30 pm
  • Saturday 10 am – 4 pm
  • Sunday 12 pm – 4 pm.

The popular Mystery Box and the Home Library Service will continue to operate.

The ACT Heritage Library will also remain closed at this time. For historians and researchers who wish to submit an enquiry, please continue to do so through the Libraries ACT website and skilled library staff will assist and respond electronically.
