Lions Outback Vision Brings A New Level of Eye Health Care To The North West.

The Broome Kimberley Klub will be taking on a very different personality when refurbishment by the Lions Eye Institute transforms the former backpacker accommodation into an eye health centre, including consultation rooms and community access space.

The North West Hub is a model for eye health care that is based on efficient and cost-effective methods for providing the most advanced eye health care available, within a supportive multi-disciplinary health care environment.

McCusker Director Lions Outback Vision, Dr Angus Turner said, “It is important that we are able to offer specialist eye health care to the regions so residents have the same access to services as those in the metropolitan area. People don’t need the added burden of travel and being away from family when they need specialist treatment.”

The building will be a North West base for Lions Outback Vision, part of the Lions Eye Institute, providing access to ophthalmology and telehealth clinics, seminar rooms and open space for community diabetic health education.

The property was donated by Hawaiian and Wen Giving Foundation to deliver eye health services, education and patient support that will reach the far north west and north east of our state, benefiting Indigenous people, local residents, health workers and their communities.

Local building company, Indent, has been engaged to complete the refurbishment which has been supported by Christine and Kerry Stokes, Australian Capital Equity, The Fred Hollows Foundation and the Australian Federal Government. It is anticipated that the first phase of building will be complete for the second half of the year.

The new centre will see 3 ophthalmologists residing in Broome and available for 24 hour emergency eye health support. According to Dr Turner, “the whole team is really excited to be part of the Broome community and look forward to being able to provide services from the Hub once refurbishment is complete.” In the meantime, the team will continue to travel across the North West communities with a team of eye health professionals who are committed to improving eye health in the outback.
