Local Business Woman named as a finalist for National Awards
Davina Borrow-Jones has been named as a finalist for the 2020 AusMumpreneur Awards in 3 categories; the Emerging, B2B, and People’s Choice Customer Service categories.
The AusMumpreneur Awards presented by The Women’s Business School celebrate and recognize Australian Mums in business achieving outstanding success in areas such as business excellence, product development, customer service and digital innovation. The awards are designed to recognize the growing number of women who successfully balance motherhood and business in a way that suits their life and family.
Davina is the founder, and sole practitioner at The Mumpreneur Lawyer. Davina helps Mum start-ups protect their businesses from legal risk with personalised online legal packages. She offers fixed prices and flexible appointment times for Mums, which makes the customer journey a breeze. She specialises in e-commerce and contract drafting, and also intellectual property and trademarks.
Davina has been a lawyer for over 15 years. She started working for big corporate law firms in outsourcing and intellectual property in 2005, and then developed a broader focus on commercial matters. For the last 10 years she has worked predominantly with small businesses.
Davina is an advocate for gender equality and women’s empowerment, or more particularly a Mum’s economic empowerment. She has performed international human rights pro bono work, and pro bono work for organisations set up to deal with various crisis situations such as the recent bush fires on the south coast, and Covid-19.
“The Mumpreneur Lawyer was born out of a frustration with the legal industry matched with personal necessity. I was vexed with the way law firms were billing clients, and the reluctance for change and embracing technology. And I was disappointed that Mums had very little option other than to take their kids along to legal appointments at inconvenient times with lawyers that spoke to them in another language.
Becoming a Mum also helped me realise that working to create a certain number of billable hours each day was a very unproductive use of my time when I wanted to spend it bonding with my new son. I also realised quality work was far more important than a billable hour. By setting up ways to create quality work for clients with fixed costs rather than billing by the hour, and working flexibly with clients in terms of online and evening appointments, I have created a thriving business that works for me and other Mums.”
Davina is delighted to be named as a finalist and is proud of the growth of her firm over the last year.
There are many benefits to balancing business and motherhood as Davina explains, “being able to control my work so that I can spend quality time with my son and partner, family and friends is ideal” and “being able to implement innovations quickly without the delay of having to appease a hierarchical organization has been invaluable in 2020, a year of uncertainty”.
It can be challenging to be a successful business woman whilst raising a family and Davina gives this advice for others thinking about starting their own enterprise. “Be a solution to a problem, then find another problem and another solution …. And “Keep it simple. Keep it lean.”
