Looking To Creative Future Of Great South Coast

  • Minister for Creative Industries

Community members across the Great South Coast are being encouraged to share their views on what creativity means to them and how it could bring new opportunities, investment, visitors and jobs to their town for the region’s first creative industries strategy.

Minister for Creative Industries Martin Foley today called for insights and ideas for the strategy, which will create a roadmap for the growth of the creative and cultural businesses, practitioners, attractions and festivals that call the region home.

The need for a strategy was identified by the Great South Coast Regional Partnership which has held three assemblies since 2016, with hundreds of people attending and voicing their priorities for the region.

The development will be led by Regional Arts Victoria in partnership with the five councils of the Great South Coast region – Corangamite, Glenelg, Moyne, Southern Grampians and Warrnambool – and the Great Ocean Road Tourism Board.

A consultation website has been launched for submissions and a series of public forums will be held.

Feedback gathered during the local consultations will also be used to inform the Andrews Labor Government’s second state-wide creative industries strategy, which will guide investment in Victoria’s creative industries between 2020-2024.

A joint public forum on the Great South Coast Creative Industries Strategy and the state-wide strategy will be held on Tuesday, 20 August from 6:00-8:00pm at the Pavilion Café & Bar, Warrnambool. As noted by Minister for Creative Industries Martin Foley

“The creative industries in the Great South Coast are diverse – from the incredible UNESCO-listed heritage at Budj Bim to the festivals, galleries, venues and the many creative practitioners who call the region home.”

“I encourage everyone ─ from practitioners to keen audience members ─ to give their ideas on how to make the Great South Coast’s creative industries even stronger and more vibrant.”

As stated by Regional Arts Victoria chief executive Joe Toohey

“In all our work over many years in the South West, we’ve never found this region short of ideas. A strategic approach like this allows us to determine how we can work together to turn these ideas into action.”
