Machete attacker charged in Ultimo

A man has been charged with assault after a machete attack in Ultimo yesterday morning.

About 2.20am (Saturday 28 December 2019), a 20-year-old man was walking to his bicycle after picking up a delivery from a fast food restaurant on George Street, when a man approached him and allegedly punched him in the face, causing him to fall to the ground.

Two men who witnessed the incident approached the man, aged 22, before he ran from the scene, pursued by the witnesses on their own bicycles.

One witness, aged 23, caught up to the man before he was also allegedly punched in the face and then hit on the head with a machete. The 23-year-old was wearing a helmet at the time.

The 22-year-old man attempted to run from the scene again but was detained by the witnesses after a short struggle. The second witness was also allegedly struck on the head with the machete, while the 23-year-old sustained a cut to the arm.

Shortly after, officers attached to Sydney City Police Area Command arrived and arrested the 22-year-old.

He was taken to Day Street Police Station where he was charged with two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, two counts of common assault and use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention.

The man appeared in Parramatta Local Court yesterday, where he was formally refused bail to appear before Central Local Court on Monday 13 January 2020.
