The Tasmanian Liberal Government has immediately entered into an agreement to extend support for flights between Hobart and King and Flinders Islands until March next year, ensuring thousands more visitors are able to experience these unique destinations.
Tasmanians have responded in droves since the Tasmanian Government underwrote a service for new regular passenger flights between Hobart and the two Bass Strait Islands last year.
As a result, we have seen a significant increase in visitation that has been fantastic for local businesses and both islands’ economies. Importantly, the services also provide residents of both islands easier access to healthcare and other services in Hobart.
In our Plan for our first 100 days, we committed to immediately entering into an agreement to extend underwritten flights between Hobart and the two Bass Strait Islands to March 2022. We committed to doing this within our first week and we have delivered on that.
This $1 million initiative will support the Islands through the quieter winter period and enable operators to be prepared for a busy spring and summer.
Both flights have performed beyond expectations to date and forward bookings are strong.
Tasmanians have voted for stability and certainty at a time when our State needs it most and we have hit the ground running to deliver our clear plan laid out during the election to secure Tasmania’s future.
