Man arrested over murder of Ferenc ‘David’ Stemler – Strike Force Murrell

Homicide Squad detectives have arrested a man over the murder of Ferenc ‘David’ Stemler in Sydney’s southwest last year.

About 2am on Thursday 27 July 2023, emergency services were called to Broughton Street in Canterbury, after reports of a shooting.

On arrival, officers attached to Burwood Police Area Command found a man with gunshots wounds. He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, died at the scene.

The man has since been identified as 28-year-old Ferenc ‘David’ Stemler.

Local police, with assistance from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, commenced inquiries before the matter was taken carriage of by Task Force Magnus under Strike Force Murrell.

To date, a man and woman have been charged and remain before the courts.

Following further inquiries – including a public appeal for information – about 8.30am today (Thursday 28 March 2024), a 30-year-old man was transferred from a correctional centre in Silverwater to Burwood Police Station, where he is expected to be charged with murder.

Police will allege in court the man was in the white commodore at the time Mr Stemler approached it and was fatally shot.

Inquiries under Strike Force Murrell continue.
