Man assaulted on Swanston Street Melbourne 18 March

Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives are hoping to identify a man after a man was seriously assaulted in Melbourne’s CBD this month.

Police have been told a 57-year-old man was at a function at a hotel on Swanston Street with work colleagues about 10.30pm on Wednesday 2 March.

He left the hotel about 11.50pm with a group of friends when an unknown man also left the venue and approached the group.

It is believed the unknown male offender punched the victim to the face causing him to fall to the ground unconscious and continued to assault him while he was lying on the ground.

Two men tried to push the offender away when they were also assaulted.

He then ran from the scene.

The victim, a Richmond man, was taken to hospital with serious facial injuries.

Investigators have released images and CCTV of a man that may be able to assist with their enquiries.

The offender is perceived as Caucasian in appearance, approximately 30-year-old with black shaved hair, facial stubble and sleeve tattoos on both arms.

He was wearing a black cap, black t-shirt with CFMEU logo with khaki pants and white shoes.
