Man caught travelling at 193km/h in Glenrowan

A man’s car has been impounded after he was caught travelling at extreme speeds in Glenrowan yesterday.

Wangaratta Highway Patrol officers were patrolling in an unmarked police vehicle when a 2003 red Ford sedan quickly overtook them on the Hume Freeway about 7am.

Officers followed the car and detected it allegedly travelling at 193km/h in a 100km zone.

Police intercepted the car and spoke with the 44-year-old driver, who had a 15-year-old passenger in the car.

The Wangaratta man had his car impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1625

He will also be charged on summons with traffic offences.

Wangaratta Highway Patrol Acting Senior Sergeant Michael O’Connors said police are determined to stamp out reckless behaviour on Victorian roads.

“It’s extremely disappointing to see such dangerous driver behaviour in the lead up to Christmas,” A/S/Sgt O’Connors said.

“We want everyone to make it home safely so they can enjoy the holiday period with their families.

“Police will have a highly visible presence over the Christmas and New Years period to hold these dangerous drivers to account.”

Anyone who may have dashcam footage of the Ford sedan is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or file a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
