Man charged following pursuit in allegedly stolen car – Southern Highlands

A man who has never held a driver’s licence will face court today, charged following a pursuit in an allegedly stolen car in the state’s Southern Highlands.

Just before 8.20am on Saturday 11 March 2023, officers attached to The Hume Police District’s Traffic and Highway Patrol Command allegedly detected a Holden Crewman utility travelling at 156km/h in a 110km/h signposted area along the Hume Motorway, Mittagong.

The driver allegedly failed to stop when directed and a pursuit was initiated; however, was terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.

Soon after, the vehicle was stopped on the exit ramp to the Illawarra Highway, Sutton Forest.

A 29-year-old man was arrested underwent breath and drug tests; both of which returned negative results.

He was taken to Southern Highlands Police Station, before being taken to Bowral Hospital assessment under police guard.

He has since been released from hospital and taken back to the Police Station where he was charged with five offences;

  • Class A m/v exceed speed > 30 km/h – Lidar,
  • Receive etc property stolen outside NSW,
  • Goods in personal custody suspected being stolen (motor vehicle),
  • Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, and,
  • Never licensed person drive vehicle on road – first offence.

He was refused bail to appear in Campbelltown Local Court today (Thursday 23 March 2023).

Checks revealed the man has never held a licence and that the vehicle was reported stolen from Victoria on Wednesday 22 February 2023.
