Man charged over online scam after more than a decade evading capture

Banyule Crime Investigation Unit detectives have located and charged a man who had spent more than a decade hiding from police.

An extensive investigation led police to a Caulfield property where a man who had been wanted on several warrants since 2011 was arrested on Friday, 31 March.

He has been charged with several counts of obtaining property by deception, obtaining a financial advantage by deception, relating to eight incidents of frauds committed in Victoria between 2011 and 2022.

He was also charged with resisting arrest.

The charges relate to an alleged series of offences where people were scammed out of money online.

It will be alleged the man contacted people who had posted online seeking a rental property.

The people were then offered a property and asked to provide rent and bond payments before all contact was ceased.

The 38-year-old man of no fixed address has been remanded to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 20 April.
