A $14.8 million facelift for one of the Gold Coast’s most visited community spaces is underway and due to be unveiled at the end of the year.

Works are underway to expand the Albert Waterways Community Centre and carry out major upgrades and reconfiguration of the surrounding areas including creative spaces, a café and increased parking.

“The Broadbeach Community Precinct is receiving a full makeover to create an even more inviting space for everyone to gather, whether for recreational, educational, social or cultural activities,” said Mayor Tom Tate.

“We look forward to welcoming our local residents and visitors to enjoy the enhanced facilities when the work is complete at the end of 2022.”

The Albert Waterways Community Centre will receive an additional 515m2 of space including a multi-functional activity room and a meeting room suitable for a range of regular or casual community uses.

Divisional Councillor Pauline Young said: “There is a full refurbishment underway for the co-located community building within the precinct with an additional 250m2 of office space. This will continue to house Life Education and provide additional meeting and co-working spaces for community and cultural groups.”

The external façade of both buildings will see a new and more modern architectural design.

The existing plaza area adjoining the Library and Community Centre is being redeveloped as a focal point and enhanced entry to the facilities as well as a café space with two creative pods.

Other improvements will include additional parking and improved pedestrian and vehicle access for a range of events.

Design and construction work will be completed by Paynters Pty Ltd and Peddle Thorpe Architects.

The library and nearby playground will remain open during the reconstruction.
