Mayor Maytom Retires as Chair of Murray Darling Association Region 9

Leeton Shire Council

Pending his upcoming retirement as an elected representative of Leeton Shire Council, Mayor Cr Paul Maytom has retired from the position of Murray Darling Association (MDA) Region 9 Chair.

The MDA is the peak body for local government in the Murray-Darling Basin. Its purpose is to provide effective representation of local government and communities at state and federal level in the management of Basin resources by providing information, facilitating discussion and seeking to inform government policy.

Mayor Maytom has been a member of the MDA for more than 25 years and Chair of the MDA Region 9 for more than a decade. He will continue to be a member of the executive committee.

On his resignation, Mayor Maytom congratulated Griffith City Councillor and 2018 Farmer of the Year, Glen Andreazza, who was elected Chair of Region 9 at the annual general meeting of the MDA Region 9 which was held this week in Leeton.

“Cr Andreazza’s election marks a strong and stable transition in MDA leadership for local government in Region 9,” said Mayor Maytom.

“I am confident that his strong leadership will ensure local government and communities continue to work together to achieve a healthy, vibrant and thriving Murray-Darling Basin.”

Cr Andreazza will be supported by the Region 9 executive committee which, along with Mayor Maytom, comprises Jackie Kruger (General Manager, Leeton Shire Council), Bede Spannagle (Riverina Water County Council) and Cr Dino Zappacosta (Griffith City Council).

MDA’s Chief Executive Officer Emma Bradbury thanked outgoing chair Mayor Maytom for his sterling contribution and commitment.

“Paul’s considered wisdom and passion for water and community has brought much balance and reason to the journey of water reform in the wake of the Basin Plan,” Ms Bradbury said.

“On a personal note, Paul’s leadership, quiet counsel and formidable commitment to the MDA has been and continues to be an inspiration to me.

“My thanks to you for all you do Paul,” she said.
