McGowan Government launches Whole of System Plan

  • Renewable generation expected to triple by 2040, helping drive down emissions
  • Energy Transformation Taskforce delivers inaugural Whole of System Plan
  • Rooftop solar, wind generation and battery storage to play important role
  • Energy Minister Bill Johnston today launched Western Australia’s first Whole of System Plan, which provides a 20-year outlook on the future of our main electricity network – the South West Interconnected System (SWIS).

The plan models four scenarios detailing how changes in demand, technology, and the economy, may shape the way we use electricity, and guide the investments we make over the coming decades.

The modelling reveals renewable generation is expected to triple by 2040, with a strong uptake in wind power. Rooftop solar will continue to displace traditional forms of generation.

Battery storage will also play a big part in our future, helping stabilise the system as well as unlocking new markets.

Renewable energy sources, including the 300,000 households with rooftop solar, account for over 20 per cent of the annual electricity generated in the SWIS.

Earlier this month, the Premier Mark McGowan and Minister Johnston announced the State Government’s plan to construct WA’s biggest battery.

The State Government is currently in discussions with the Commonwealth Government regarding potential funding for the project. A decision will be made later this year.

As stated by Energy Minister Bill Johnston:

“The McGowan Government continues to transform the energy landscape for all Western Australians, this Whole of System Plan will play an integral part in the State’s transition towards a low carbon future.

“It’s the most comprehensive modelling study ever undertaken into the future of WA’s electricity system and it will support our transition to low-cost electricity.

“Our State is embracing renewable generation, with one in three households having rooftop solar panels, this signifies that battery storage will play an important role in our future.”
