Melbourne Renegades bring cricket family day to Coburg

Primary school students across Moreland tested their skills against a few of Victoria’s best male and female cricketers as they warmed up for the Melbourne Renegades Family Day on Sunday 15 December at Coburg City Oval.

Women’s Big Bash League squad captain Jess Duffin, one of the world’s fastest female bowlers Lea Tahuhu and Big Bash League (BBL) premiership player Mackenzie Harvey shared stories about their journey to the top of their sport before putting around 250 kids through their paces with some fun cricket activities.

Coburg’s City Oval will be home to all things cricket from 10am on Sunday 15 December with Moreland City Council and the Melbourne Renegades partnering to provide free cricket clinics, activities and giveaways to celebrate the launch of the cricket season.

The championship winning Melbourne Renegades BBL squad will also be in attendance, showing off their BBL|08 trophy.

Moreland Mayor Cr Lambros Tapinos said the event promised to be a fun day for the whole community.

“Cricket is a truly international sport and the Melbourne Renegades Family Day provides a great opportunity for our diverse Moreland community to come together – many of whom have very strong cricketing heritage,” Cr Tapinos said.

“It’s also a great chance for others to come and try cricket for the first time in a relaxed setting. We look forward to welcoming everyone.”

Melbourne Renegades Acting General Manger BBL David Lever said the Renegades have fantastic support throughout the north-west corridor of Melbourne.

“We have a strong membership base throughout Brunswick, Coburg and the surrounding suburbs, so it’s only appropriate that we give our fans a chance to meet their heroes,” Lever said.

“Moreland City Council have been tremendous in their support of this event and we know the families who come along will have a good time.

“Our championship winning BBL squad will be here as they prepare to defend their title and we hope bringing the team and the fans together in the City of Moreland will give us some momentum leading into BBL|09.”

The Melbourne Renegades Family Day has been held annually since the club’s inception in 2011.

St Fidelis Primary School, Brunswick South West Primary School, Our Lady Help of Christians School, Coburg Primary School and Australian International Academy were the lucky schools to take part in the recent Melbourne Renegades school visits.
