Housing Minister Roger Jaensch must come to tomorrow’s housing meeting hosted by the Hobart City Council with a detailed plan to tackle Tasmania’s homelessness crisis.
Shadow Housing Minister, Alison Standen, said Minister Jaensch and his Federal counterpart Michael Sukkar needed to come prepared with real outcomes.
“We want to see a workplan that will detail exactly what action will be taken by the State Government, by when and how much funding will be committed to addressing homelessness in Tasmania,” Ms Standen said.
“Last Friday, the Government promised a plan would be taken to Cabinet this week. The Minister must outline these solutions urgently, unless he and the Premier were rolled by the party-room once again.
“We need assurances that additional accommodation will be fit for purpose and we must not lose sight of the longer term initiatives that will be put in place to address housing supply.
“Labor wants to be part of the solution, the Minister must be transparent and provide a workplan as promised last Friday so we can get to work on this.
“On any given night, 1,600 Tasmanians are homeless and many other families are couch surfing, relying on their friends and families or living in sheds, cars or tents.
“Tasmanians are sick of talkfests and want real outcomes to help those in need and it’s time for the Minister to take action now that winter has well and truly set in.”
