A stormwater network upgrade in some residential streets of Mooloolaba is set to help alleviate local flooding in an area which can be susceptible during severe weather events.
The work, which starts in mid-February, includes new stormwater pipelines between Lawrence Street and Ocean View Avenue.
Division 4 Councillor John Connolly said the upgrade was the final stage of a larger flood mitigation project around Ocean View Avenue.
“As all residents and businesses in this area know, flash flooding can be an issue when we experience heavy rain in Mooloolaba,” Cr Connolly said.
“This project will ensure increased safety for the community during flash flood events by improving the stormwater infrastructure.
“There will be fully-functioning underground stormwater networks and the aboveground water flow will be improved as a result too.
“We will be doing everything possible to make this construction process as smooth as possible for our community and thank people for their patience.
“Due to the nature of these works, with pipeline being installed under the road, there will be some short detours at times.”
Pedestrian access, including to The Velo Project café, will remain open at all times.
Council has liaised with residents and businesses in the area and will continue to do so during construction.
The upgrade is expected to be completed by May 2019 (weather permitting).
The stormwater network improvements are jointly funded by council, through its $370 million Capital Works Program, and through the Queensland Reconstruction Authority’s Natural Disaster Resilience Program (NDRP).
