More electric vehicles than ever on ACT roads

New data shows that electric vehicle (EV) ownership in the ACT will have more than doubled in the last 12 months by New Years Day.

Minister for Water, Energy and Emissions Reduction Shane Rattenbury said that one in 50 vehicles on our roads now an EVs, doubling from one per cent to two per cent in the last year.

“The ACT has the highest rate of EV ownership per capita in Australia, and recent data shows how Canberrans are really embracing the shift to zero emissions travel,” Minister Rattenbury said.

“In November, one in four new cars registered in the ACT was an EV (or 23.9%). A total of 429 new EVs were registered in Canberra during November, which is just short of the 441 ZEVs purchased in the entire year of 2019.

“This is great news to end the year on, showing that the transition to EVs is well on the way, with numbers continuing to rise. This puts us in good stead to meet our target of 80-90 per cent of new car sales being zero emissions vehicles by 2030.

“To support more EVs on our roads, more than 125 public EV chargers are now available in the Territory, with many more on the way. We’re working hard to install more chargers to reach our goal of 180 public chargers by 2025.

“It’s important that Canberrans have the opportunity to access sustainable transport options including EVs, which is why we recently held EV Drive Days, in partnership with NRMA, to give people a chance to try out an EV for themselves.
