The City of Playford has welcomed 232 new Australian citizens at citizenship ceremonies held over June and July.
Mayor Glenn Docherty conferred citizenship on 79 people at the June ceremony, followed by a further 153 new citizens in July.
Mayor Docherty said citizenship ceremonies were among the most meaningful events he had the privilege of attending in his role as Mayor.
“It is a great honour to welcome people as they take this important step and formally become Australian citizens,” he said.
“Every person brings their own story, experiences and aspirations to our community, and it is incredibly moving to share this milestone with them and their families.
“Our newest citizens have chosen to build their future in Playford – their cultures and skills are helping drive the growth of our community and shape the future of our city.”
Across June and July, Playford’s newest citizens came from a diverse range of countries.
These include Afghanistan, Armenia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brazil, Burundi, Cambodia, Cook Islands, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Iran, Italy, Liberia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Peru, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Tunisia, United Kingdom and United States.
This year also marks the 77th anniversary of Australia’s first citizenship ceremony. Since then, more than six million people from across the globe have chosen to become Australian citizens.
Earlier this year, Mayor Docherty also reached a significant milestone when he officially conferred his 6000th new Australian citizen at a City of Playford citizenship ceremony.
Mayor Docherty has now conferred Australian citizenship on 6503 people, with the next citizenship ceremony to be held in September.
