More trains coming as Queensland Rail reaches final in-principle agreements

  • Queensland Rail will restore an additional 417 extra weekly services across the South East Queensland (SEQ) network, bringing operations to 91 per cent of the full timetable.
  • Queensland Rail has also reached in-principle agreements on the remaining Enterprise Agreement.
  • Beenleigh and Shorncliffe line services will uplift to 15-minute peak services (from 30-minute peak services) to match the frequency of other major lines.

From Monday 12 October, Queensland Rail customers will see additional services across the SEQ network, as work to clear the maintenance backlog caused by previous union protected industrial action progresses further.

An additional 417 extra weekly services will be running, bringing the total number of services to 7,725 per week, or 91 per cent of the full timetable.

The full SEQ rail timetable is expected to be returned by the end of November, as Queensland Rail is able.

Union protected industrial action has now been lifted, which means more trains are available to be added to the timetable where and when customers need them most.

It comes after months of reduced services because ongoing union protected industrial action caused a backlog of maintenance, which stranded rollingstock and forced Queensland Rail to implement a reduced timetable – in place since 5 May.

In-principle deals have been reached on the remaining three (of seven) Enterprise Agreements – Network; Rollingstock and Operations; and a new electrical-only agreements- following months of negotiations with the assistance of the Fair Work Commission.

Key conditions across the latest replacement agreements include:

  • 8.5 per cent wage increase over three years plus an additional cost of living relief payment (up to 1 per cent in each of the second and third years depending on inflation), in line with the Queensland Government-Owned Corporations Wages Policy
  • Strategic Delivery Allowance – an added incentive to deliver major projects for Queensland
  • Backpay will be paid from 1 August 2026 for the Network; and Rollingstock and Operations agreements, and from 1 September 2026 for the new electrical-only agreement.

All outcomes have been recommended by the Fair Work Commission to be taken to a ballot of employees and is recommending that those employees vote yes.

Queensland Rail Head of Corporate Affairs Nev Conway said Queensland Rail was on track.

“We appreciate the ongoing patience of our customers over the last few months while we navigated these challenges,” Mr Conway said.

“We understand the reduced timetable was inconvenient, and we are so pleased to be getting back to 91 per cent of full operations.

“Queensland Rail is still working its way through the maintenance backlog caused by months of union protected industrial action and we expect to be back to full timetable by the end of November.

“We are also grateful for the assistance of the Fair Work Commission over the past few months, which has resulted in securing a fair and reasonable deal for its employees.”

The additional services will be added to Journey Planner in the coming days and customers are encouraged to check online before they travel.
