Most Victorian businesses receive less COVID support than those in New South Wales

Tax Institute figures show Victorian businesses have been short-changed up to $1.01 million each compared with those in New South Wales (NSW), under the different business support schemes.

The below table contrasts the supports provided to businesses under schemes designed by the Victorian and NSW State Governments.

Tax Institute’s senior advocate, Robyn Jacobson, said “for many businesses, the Victorian program appears to be less generous, and is also restricted to particular industries. [NSW’s] JobSaver, on the other hand, is available to any business or not-for-profit organisation that experiences a decline in turnover of 30 per cent or more and meets other eligibility conditions”.

At the extreme, a business with $20 million in annual payroll has been eligible for more than $1.01 million in support from New South Wales but none at all in Victoria.

As stated by the Shadow Treasurer, David Davis:

“Victorian businesses are the world’s longest locked down yet have been short changed on critical support from Daniel Andrews.

“So many Victorian small businesses are on a knife edge and fending for themselves, they need greater support now.

“It’s wrong and Daniel Andrews and Tim Pallas should hang their heads in shame.”
