New cars for programs to support disadvantaged learner drivers

Michael Ferguson,Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government is committed to helping disadvantaged learner drivers get the experience needed to gain their driver’s licence.

That’s why we are investing in the Learner Driver Mentor Program (LDMP), which assists learners in gaining the essential hours of driving experience needed to obtain a driving licence.

Seven new vehicles are also being delivered to assist learner drivers without access to a suitable vehicle or supervisory driver to get on the road and get the experience needed to gain their licence.

Getting a licence opens opportunities for people to access employment, education and services and LDMPs are supporting disadvantaged Tasmanians to do this.

We know that lack of a driver’s licence is a significant barrier towards young people gaining employment, and this program is making a real difference in the lives of many disadvantaged Tasmanians.

Currently 16 LDMPs operate across Tasmania helping 329 learners who are supported by 210 volunteer mentors. In 2018/19 a record 197 people received their provisional licence after participating in the program and over 20,000 on-road hours were achieved.

This initiative supports the Government’s Strategic Growth framework, which will take a whole-of-government approach to policy, planning and investment for sustainable, long term growth, to ensure all Tasmanians can participate in and benefit form a strong economy.
