New CSIRO research on pathways to net-zero emissions in Australia

New research from Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, into decarbonisation opportunities across more than 80% of Australia’s economy will help inform the country’s transition to a net zero economy.

Commonwealth Bank’s General Manager Climate Strategy and Commitments, Alex Matthews, said the CSIRO report, Pathways to Net Zero Emissions – An Australian Perspective on Rapid Decarbonisation, sets out a domestically focused framework to respond to the challenges and opportunities presented by climate change. This includes Australia’s unique position to use its natural resources to support the transition.

With targeted Australian data and information, the report complements and builds upon existing global research undertaken by the International Energy Agency and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Developed with the financial support of CBA, the CSIRO report utilises the agency’s cutting-edge analytical models along with insights from a broad range of industries that are being affected by or are likely to be increasingly impacted by climate change and the transition to net zero.

“The transition to net zero is extremely complex, and creates risks and opportunities for Australia. We funded this research as part of our commitment to actively contribute to the national focus on climate change and to inform the approach we are taking in our own operations and in partnership with our customers,” said Mr Matthews.

The views expressed in the CSIRO report are those of the authors’ and do not necessarily represent the views of the CBA or other stakeholders consulted during this work.
