The State Government has awarded The University of Western Australia (UWA) a five-year, $4.6 million road safety research contract.
The Road Safety Council has tasked UWA with establishing the Western Australian Centre for Road Safety Research, to conduct planned and reactive research programs to reduce road trauma in Western Australia.
The road safety research program is developed by a multiagency committee that is supported by the Road Safety Council and the Road Safety Commission.
The Curtin Monash Accident Research Centre has held Western Australia’s road safety research contract since December 31, 2014, which will expire on December 31, 2019.
As stated by Road Safety Minister Michelle Roberts:
“I congratulate The University of Western Australia on being awarded this crucial road safety research contract that is designed to save lives on Western Australia’s roads.
“The UWA bid demonstrated the university’s capacity to conduct cutting-edge research in a field of critical importance to us all.
“Improvements have been made continually over the last 20 years in road safety, but there is no room for complacency.
“This centre will provide the Road Safety Council and our Government with an important resource for the development of road safety strategies and policies into the future.”
