New facilities to put Mount Lawley students at cutting edge

  • Cutting-edge $4 million STEM centre to open for the 2021 school year
  • Almost $1 million upgrade to design and technology building now underway
  • More than 1,900 students will benefit from the new facilities
  • Premier Mark McGowan has toured Mount Lawley Senior High School today to view the progress of a brand new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) building and upgraded design and technology facilities.

Construction of the new $4 million STEM building is nearing completion and will give students access to the latest technology and features from the start of the 2021 school year.

Delivering on a key McGowan Government election commitment, the two-storey STEM building includes hi-tech engineering and mechatronics workshops, two science laboratories and two general purpose classrooms.

Students participating in the school’s STEM programs will have access to leading-edge facilities including the latest laser printing and 3D CAD opportunities, helping prepare them for the jobs of the future.

Upgrades to the Design and Technology building will deliver improved woodwork, metal work and technical graphics teaching spaces, upgraded welding bays and a new dust extraction system, with the $965,000 project set to be completed by late March 2021.

These significant projects are being constructed by BADGE Constructions and support local jobs.

As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

“It’s great to see how these important projects are developing and I look forward to seeing students using the new facilities when school starts next year.

“A brand new STEM building will allow Mount Lawley Senior High School staff to expand on their programs in this area and offer the best opportunities for the growing number of students.”

As stated by Mount Lawley MLA Simon Millman:

“I’m pleased to see this important election commitment taking shape for our community.

“With the construction of this STEM building the McGowan Government has delivered every local promise we made to the people of Mount Lawley at the last election.

“This is another example of the McGowan Government’s strong commitment to ensuring young Western Australians receive the best possible education in modern facilities.

“We have big plans for Mount Lawley Senior High School as part of the City Deal, which will see the school incorporate Edith Cowan University’s world-class WA Academy of Performing Arts facilities, when ECU transitions into the Perth CBD in 2025.

“Our strong investment in the school will ensure local students have every opportunity to succeed.”
