New ferry set to service Bruny Island residents and visitors

Michael Ferguson,Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

The first of Sealink’s new Bruny Island ferry fleet will be ready to hit the water next month.

The $7.5 million, 45 metre vessel will provide a more reliable, efficient and comfortable service for passengers.

The high speed ferry will be a welcome addition to the Bruny Island run this summer and will be complemented by significant land-side infrastructure, to be announced soon, which will enable Sealink to operate to their full capacity.

In a strong show of confidence in our Tasmanian advanced manufacturing businesses, Sealink awarded both of its two ship building contracts to local company Richardson Devine Marine.

Construction has also commenced on the second new ferry for the Bruny Island service, which will be delivered in 2021.

The two new ferries combined with landside infrastructure upgrades and new schedules, will result in faster turnaround times and a greater crossing capacity.

I also look forward to sharing soon with the local community our vision to further improve the landside infrastructure to ensure the greater passenger and vehicle capacity is maximised in the longer term.

It is job-creating investments such as this that have resulted in the Hodgman majority Liberal Government leaping to the top of the economic table with nation-leading business confidence, economic growth and private investment growth.

With 15,800 more Tasmanian jobs since March 2014, the Hodgman majority Liberal Government will continue investing in Tasmania’s infrastructure to maintain our economic momentum and support another 10,000 jobs.
