New glow in dark line marking to light way along Bendigo Creek Trail

In partnership with the Department of Transport, the City of Greater Bendigo is trialling the installation of photoluminescent (glow in the dark) line marking along the Bendigo Creek shared use path from Nolan Street, around Lake Weeroona to Howard Street Epsom to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety.

The project is being delivered by Regional Roads Victoria under the Department of Transport to deliver safer, connected journeys while supporting Victoria’s economic recovery.

City of Greater Bendigo Engineering Manager Ian McLauchlan said this is the first time that the photoluminescent product, developed by Australian company OmniGrip Direct will be used in Greater Bendigo.

“This new line marking product looks and functions like ordinary line marking in daylight but emits stored light which enhances its visibility when dark,” Mr McLauchlan said.

“With lighting unaffordable and impractical at a lot of locations, it is believed that photoluminescent line-marking may provide a cost-effective solution to assist users to safely navigate roads and pathways in low light and night-time conditions.

“The Bendigo Creek Trail is a very popular and well used shared used path in Greater Bendigo and the line marking is expected to enhance the useability of the path both during the day and at night.

“The City is pleased to partner with the Department of Transport to trial this new line marking technology along a considerable part of the Bendigo Creek Trail and around Lake Weeroona.

“We are interested in evaluating the success of the Bendigo Creek Trail trial to see if this product can be used for safety purposes in other parts of Greater Bendigo in the future.”

Work to apply the new line marking has commenced and will be completed this week.
