New home for car club and other community groups
Council has tonight endorsed the start of the design and construction process for a new community purpose-built facility to re-locate the Wagga Wagga Veterans & Vintage Motor Club (WVVMC), University of the Third Age (U3A) and other community groups.
The new site is the former Wagga Women’s Bowling Club at 26 Shaw Street adjacent to the Duke of Kent oval.
In December 2020 Council sold the WVVMC building site at 205 Morgan Street at public auction with a commitment to the tenants to find alternative accommodation.
Council has since investigated appropriate alternative locations for the community groups utilising the facility.
A report to Council recommended the construction of a new facility is the preferred option based on four key factors: location, cost, timing and quality.
The report has also identified benefits and opportunities to be gained from building a larger facility that includes additional community groups, consolidation of facilities in the city and maximising the use of the new facility.

Men’s health forum funding
Council has resolved to withdraw COVID-19 Fast Track Event Sponsorship funding of $2,274 to Men Talking With Men for a Men’s Health Toolbox Forum.
Council staff recently confirmed that Centacare Southwest NSW was not the auspice of this event, which was a condition of the funding.
The funding amount will, however, be held in reserve for two weeks to give the organisation time to prepare a new application for consideration by Council.

Lost Lanes funding accepted
Council has accepted State Government funding of $170,318 towards the Lost Lanes event later this month.
The fund supports the social and economic recovery of NSW regions by helping organisations to attract new events and supports existing regional events to grow bigger and better.

Mower option for Collingullie
A report will come back to Council outlining opportunities to provide Collingullie Glenfield Park Australian Football and Netball Club with a mower to assist in the upkeep of sportsgrounds at Collingullie. The request was made in a Notice of Motion put forward by Cr Paul Funnell.

Mayor’s conference reports
Cr Greg Conkey provided an update to Council after attending the Inland Rail Conference in May.
He said the conference was told freight demand in Australia was expected to increase by 60 percent over the next 40 years with Inland Rail to be a key in handling that extra freight. Inland Rail will provide 21,500 jobs during its construction phase with the $15 billion project expected to be completed by 2027.
He said locally, two level crossings – at Fernleigh Road and Docker Street – will need to be considered for underpass or overpass crossings as trains will be double stacked, longer and operating more regularly in the future.
Cr Conkey also attended the Murray Darling Association’s Annual Conference in Wentworth in May and provided a report to Council.

Flooding software upgrade
Funding of $89,500 has been approved towards ensuring Council’s flood modelling software, WaterRIDE, is upgraded and staff are trained its use.
WaterRIDE is a critical planning tool, in relation to floodwater effects, for:
* land use and strategic planning
* preparation of “flood information advice” document supporting development applications
* infrastructure engineering components
It can also play an important role during flood events to provide information critical to flood event management and decision making.

Proposed new fees and charges for access to information through the WaterRIDE flood modelling software will be placed on public exhibition for 28 days from 16 June 2021.
The proposed fees will contribute to cost recovery of the system and the resources required in the provision of information.

Report on Burrinjuck Dam’s future
Councillors received a report to consider responses from Federal and State Members of Parliament after inquiries were made into the replacement of Burrinjuck Dam and upgrading downstream infrastructure.
Council received four responses from Government representatives and agencies after resolving in September last year to follow this initiative around the dam’s future.

Report into city’s night time economy
Councillors received a report reviewing the Liquor Amendment (24-hour Economy) Bill 2020 and identifying how it may help or hinder the delivery of Council’s strategic plans.
The Bill governs entertainment and other night time economy venues in NSW and took effect on 1 December last year.
The report stated most of the changes specifically pertained to Sydney challenges and, according to several local publicans, will have little to no impact in Wagga Wagga.
RP-4 NIGHT TIME ECONOMY – LIQUOR LAWS AND ENTERTAINMENT
Support for Lake Run and Ride event
Councillors have supported a Memorandum of Understanding with Wagga Lake Run and Ride Incorporated to provide ongoing support of the event for a period of five years, starting in 2021/22.
It will also allocate $2,000 annual funding to the event for the duration of the MOU.
The Wagga Lake Run and Ride is one of the city’s largest annual participation events and one of the largest free fun run and family cycle events in Australia. The event started in 1972 and promotes a healthy active lifestyle for families.
The event attracts more than 1,500 registered participants each year and many thousands of spectators along the course. More than 30 volunteers assist on the day and local businesses donate their services for the event.
