New positions to manage and protect Tasmania’s rivers

Guy Barnett,Minister for Primary Industries and Water

Freshwater is one of Tasmania’s most precious resources and underpins the Tasmanian economy, environment, and way of life.

The Tasmanian Government acknowledges there are challenges in water management, which is why we have taken proactive actions including releasing the Rural Water Use Strategy, forming the Rural Water Roundtable made up of expert water managers, establishing a River Health Advisory Project and increasing resources by investing an additional $1.5 million.

To help implement the 29 actions outlined in the Strategy and establish the River Health Advisory Project, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania is recruiting three new positions:

  • Water Resource and River Health Scientist;
  • Water Management and River Health Engagement Officer; and
  • Project Manager Rural Water Use Strategy Implementation.

The Water Management and River Health Engagement Officer position was advertised in November and the new Scientist and Project Manager positions are now open.

The Rural Water Use Strategy supports the wise use of water and ensures Tasmania’s environmental values and river health are protected, while delivering sustainable outcomes for irrigators and renewable energy developments.

The Tasmanian Government understands that the sustainable development of our water resources has the potential to greatly increase opportunities in irrigated agriculture which creates investment opportunities and more jobs in regional communities.
