New Road Policing Centre to keep Canberra roads safe

Canberrans will be even safer on our roads with the construction of a new modern facility for ACT Road Policing.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman said The ACT Government had signed a 15-year lease for the new Road Policing Centre site at 24 Sawmill Circuit Hume.

“The Road Policing team are out in the Canberra community every day keeping people safe on our roads. We’re committed to providing our police with the tools and resources they need to do this important work safely and effectively,” Minister Gentleman said.

“The new facility will include office space, training room, labs, workshops, storage and vehicle parking. The Major Collision Team will have a dedicated workshop to examine vehicles involved in serious and fatal collisions for evidence.

“Road Policing, Emergency Management and Planning and ACT Policing’s Radio Technicians will work at the new facility. The site provides more than 6000 square metres of space for our growing team.

“This will give ACT Road Policing the flexibility to expand its operational footprint and adapt to advancing technology.

“The ACT Government provided $4.88 million funding in the 2020-21 Budget to relocate the Traffic Operations Centre from its current premises in Belconnen.

“Design is underway and works will begin later this year, with ACT Policing expected to relocate to the centre in 2022.”

Chief Police Officer for the ACT Neil Gaughan said more than 80 staff would work at the new Road Policing Centre.

“The new Road Policing Centre will provide Road Policing with a fit-for-purpose facility that will meet its future needs,” CPO Gaughan said.

“This new facility is in a central location with access to major arterial roads which will allow our officers to deploy across Canberra easily and maintain our response times in emergencies.”
