New school’s new sportsground nearing start date

Minister for Education and Minister for Industrial Relations The Honourable Grace Grace

The tender process has begun to construct a new sports complex in Rocklea, to be used by students at the new Brisbane South State Secondary College (SSC).

Member for Toohey Peter Russo said the tender process for the oval works opened earlier this month.

“Once the contract is awarded we expect that work will start on site within weeks,” Mr Russo said.

“Space is limited on the Brisbane South SSC site in Dutton Park so the Department of Education opted to build this outdoor sports facility on Marshall Road in Rocklea.

“The project includes the construction of an amenities block, car park, and a playing field to suit sports such as AFL, cricket, touch football and rugby league, to name a few.”

South Brisbane MP Jackie Trad said the new sports facility would be another great attraction for students at the brand-new school.

“This is the first new school to be built in Brisbane’s inner south in nearly 60 years,” she said.

“And with the school partnering with AFL Queensland to create an AFL Academy, these facilities will be of great use for that students involved in that excellence program.

“Students will be transported to and from the site by bus, in the same way as students from other inner-city schools like Brisbane State High School and Brisbane Grammar School are.

Ms Trad said the oval and other facilities are forecast for completion during Term 2, 2021.

“The school community will also be using the multi-purpose hall at the Dutton Park site for sport and other activities.

“The college is set to open, in stages, for Year 7 students in the 2021 school year, with future stages opening as student enrolments grow by a year level each year.”

Education Minister Grace Grace said construction of the new Brisbane South SSC is part of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to deliver new and innovative education infrastructure to support growing communities.

“We are committed to delivering world-class facilities in Queensland state schools,” Ms Grace said.

“This investment is also helping to drive the Queensland economy through the delivery of important infrastructure projects right across the state.

“And during COVID-19 and the global economic downturn that it has caused, these projects are vital in creating jobs to support Queenslanders through this time.”
