New seafood country of origin labelling law starts in hospitality settings

Dept of Industry, Science and Resources

The new information standard came into effect on 1 July 2026 under Australian Consumer Law (ACL). It applies to businesses that serve seafood for immediate consumption including restaurants, takeaways, hotels, pubs, clubs and food trucks.

These changes aim to give consumers clear information about the origin of the seafood they order.

Over the last 12 months we’ve raised awareness and helped the hospitality industry understand the new labelling requirements by providing resources and guidance material.
