To meet the needs of Western Australia’s job-creating conservation sector, the McGowan Government has announced three new job-ready skill sets to give Western Australians industry-relevant skills.
The short courses, which will deliver the skills needed for entry level jobs created by the Green Jobs Plan, are part of the Lower fees, local skills initiative and are free for young people and job seekers of all ages.
The Green Jobs Plan forms part of the WA Recovery Plan and includes $60.3 million to support projects that will protect the environment and create jobs.
The training will provide employment opportunities including fencing, seeding, planting, managing threats, and improving native vegetation and habitat for fauna such as the Carnaby’s Cockatoo.
Developed in consultation with industry, Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and Muresk Institute the skill sets include:
- Green Jobs – Safety Skill Set
- Green Jobs – Seed Collection Skill Set
- Green Jobs – Weed Control and Plant Propagation Skill Set
The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation also committed $23 million to support the Green Jobs Plan including employment targets for those impacted by COVID-19.
Course participants will gain skills needed by industry, including working safely in the industry to recognising commonly encountered plants, and how to collect, treat and store seeds for native revegetation projects.
The skill sets can be used as a pathway to obtain a full qualification. The Certificate II in Conservation and Land Management, Certificate II in Rural Operations and Certificate II in Horticulture are relevant qualifications that also offer half-price fees.
