New South Wales man charged with significant South Australian seizure of Ketamine

The South Australian Joint Agency Ice Strike Team (JAIST) arrested a man from New South Wales with trafficking in a large commercial quantity of the controlled drug Ketamine last month.

On the 21 February Australian Border Force examined an air cargo package at Adelaide airport that was found to contain 2.7 kilograms of the illicit drug ketamine. The package, originating from the United Kingdom, was assigned to the South Australia Joint Agency Ice Strike Team (JAIST) for investigation.

On Friday 28 of February, Detectives from the JAIST, assisted by members of Serious and Organised Crime Branch, conducted an investigation targeting a parcel delivery point at Dulwich. Police subsequently arrested a 41-year old man from Maroubra in NSW who attended the Dulwich address. At the time of the arrest police will allege they located a further four kilograms of ketamine within his hire vehicle.

He was charged with two counts of trafficking in a large commercial quantity of a controlled drug. He was refused bail and he will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court today (2 March).

“This operation highlights the information sharing and joint investigation abilities of the participating law enforcement agencies to deal with the illicit drugs within Australian communities,” Acting Detective Chief Inspector Jon Halliday says.

“This is a reminder to the community that people who seek to traffic illicit drugs can face penalties up to $500,000 and/or life imprisonment.”

Police will allege the 6.7 kilograms of ketamine seized is valued at approximately $1.3 million dollars.
