Northbridge is set to come alive with a flurry of entertainment, free activities and spectacular fireworks as part of the City of Perth’s New Year’s Eve celebrations on Tuesday 31 December.
Yagan Square and Perth Cultural Centre will share the action this year, boasting three stages across two venues, each offering unique entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.
“This annual event is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate Perth and welcome the New Year with family and friends in the cultural heart of our city,” said Chair Commissioner Andrew Hammond.
“This year we are not only ringing in the new year but the start of a new decade. With boundless entertainment, free family fun and a fireworks finale, the city’s all-inclusive celebration is the perfect way to welcome in 2020.”
At Yagan Square the Variety Stage will celebrate Aboriginal culture, featuring a traditional Smoking Ceremony by Aboriginal Elder Dr Richard Walley AO to kick-off proceedings at 6pm before a variety of acts including comedy, choir, circus performers and more.
The entertainment will take place in front of a powerful mural inspired by Aboriginal Dreamtime stories. The painting of the numerals ‘2020’ was commissioned by City of Perth and created by artist Patrick Garlett-Forrest who worked with students from Butler Secondary College.
“I am a Nyoongar Yamitji artist who is utilising Indigenous artwork to inspire youth to connect to culture and help shape their identity,” Mr Garlett-Forrest said.
“Local students were involved in painting the 2020 mural and bending it to create the best possible composition that expresses Perth’s beautiful cultural significance.
“We brainstormed ideas and [the students] were given the number templates and asked to express how they feel and how they are connected to Perth.
“It is important for the land to be always recognised by its Indigenous culture as it isn’t just a part of Indigenous identity but it is the birth of Perth’s identity.”
Also in Yagan Square, the Lotterywest Family Stage will keep the little ones entertained for hours, as will the Fun Fair where kids can enjoy three rides for only $10 and games for $6 each.
Over at Perth Cultural Centre the Centre Stage will have city goers up on their feet dancing the night away to music acts Cherry Lane, Flossy, Dulcie and Butter before the kids’ countdown and fireworks at 9pm.
For those without a set bedtime it’ll be well worth sticking around for Great Gable before headline act Sam Perry takes to the stage to deliver a one-man show ahead of the countdown and spectacular fireworks finale at midnight.
