Newton Court Reserve has recently reopened to the community, following extensive safety and amenity upgrades.
Following community input and extensive consultation, Council, in partnership with Victorian Government, delivered several improvements including additional lighting and redesign of the park to improve sight lines, resulting in an increased perception of safety for residents.
A community garden also features in the upgrades, with Council providing plants, garden tools and gloves for the initial planting.
Council invested more than $350,000 to the upgrades, and the Victorian Government’s Community Crime Prevention Program contributed $250,000 through the Public Safety Infrastructure Fund . The Fund is for projects which develop public safety and security infrastructure designed to improve community safety, security and confidence in public places.
Mayor Bernadene Voss said the upgrades would give residents access to vital outdoor and recreation space.
“Newton Court Reserve is a valued community asset and the upgrades ensure residents are able to feel safe when using their local park. The space is now a vibrant and playful outdoor area for our community to enjoy,” Cr Voss said.
“Features such as the community garden and scooter track are designed to bring people together to enjoy the beautiful open spaces of our City.”
The upgrades include:
- improved park and path lighting
- existing path realigned to improve sight lines
- central community garden with raised garden beds and seating
- new garden beds incorporating native plants, trees, and fruit trees
- public art
- increased lighting
- scooter track.
Newton Court Reserve construction works were completed in October 2019.
