The next generation of Australia’s trucking professionals have been given an exclusive insight into the industry, at the Australian Trucking Association’s (ATA) 2019 Technology and Maintenance Conference (TMC) thanks to PACCAR Australia.
At an apprentice luncheon held in conjunction with TMC, representatives from PACCAR Australia and its dealer network engaged with students from the Kangan Institute Automotive Centre of Excellence to share insights into the diverse career pathways and opportunities available in the Australian trucking industry.
PACCAR Australia Marketing Manager Kate Sykes said the luncheon was all about promoting the trucking industry in a positive light and connecting with the next generation of industry professionals.
“There are so many diverse roles within the trucking industry and many great career pathways,” Ms Sykes said.
“While these students may already have an apprenticeship within another industry, we want to build an awareness of what’s available so they can spread the word to their siblings, friends and colleagues, or potentially for themselves in the future.
“We need to position trucking as a first-choice career for young people and an industry that is both exciting and rewarding,” she said.
The session also saw students hear firsthand experiences from Matt Keene, Operations Manager at Hallam Truck Centre, part of PACCAR Australia’s dealer network. Mr Keene began his career as a diesel mechanic before working his way through the company in a range of positions before taking on his current role.
“Being a workshop tech was awesome, but it’s not the only role you can work in once you have completed your trade,” Mr Keene said.
“No matter what you want to do in our industry, if you have the determination and passion, there is no limit to what you can achieve,” he said.
PACCAR Australia Managing Director Andrew Hadjikakou said TMC was the perfect opportunity to engage with young apprentices.
“I congratulate the ATA for giving us the chance to connect with emerging industry professionals on such a personal level.
“To bring more than 100 heavy vehicle apprentices together in the one location at the same time has been an invaluable experience for both our team and the students.
The engagement from the students and positive conversations generated has been a truly unique experience,” he said.
