Grafton Regional Landfill is moving to the next phase of planned growth with funding to construct another section for waste storage with additional environmental controls.
One million dollars in funding has been granted to Clarence Valley Council from the NSW Government Bushfire Recovery Fund to assist with the landfill infrastructure project.
Director Environment and Planning Adam Cameron said the project was part of planned growth within the existing facility site.
“We had a dramatic influx of waste at our landfill sites following the 2019/20 bushfires,” Mr Cameron said.
“This included waste received from neighbouring councils who had landfills at capacity and hence were unable to contend with the deluge of waste that was generated after the fires.
“This funding will help us to offset the costs we experienced while processing bushfire waste through our landfill facilities, which included the disposal of asbestos and other hazardous materials.
“We will also reduce the potential for environmental impacts by installing a new containment dam to catch runoff from the landfill.”
