We are moving into the next phase of design of the Murray-Darling Basin (Basin) First Nations enduring water holding model.
The next stage will focus on the proposed model – Charitable Trust. It will seek to build a shared understanding of how it could work in practice. This includes looking at important questions such as:
- the Charitable Trust’s purpose, who the beneficiaries are
- how, why, when and who makes decisions
- what governance arrangements are needed
- what each Nation needs to take part
- how they want to engage and participate fully, and on their own terms.
The next stage will give Basin First Nations Peoples the opportunity to:
- hear how their input has shaped the recommended Charitable Trust model
- better understand the legal, governance, financial and cultural elements of the Charitable Trust
- explore how decisions could be made and what accountability arrangements may be needed
- identify what support, information or capability-building Nations and communities may need to engage in the next stage of co-design.
First Nations will be able to engage in this process through:
- in-person community sessions
- virtual sessions
- direct meetings.
Engagement dates are currently being finalised.
